Jeffrey M. Rothschild, MD, MPH
Principal Investigator, Project 3.

Jeffrey M. Rothschild is an internist who has practiced critical care medicine for 14 years and has been a hospitalist and health services researcher for the past
10 years. Currently he is a member of the Division of General Medicine and Primary Care at Brigham and Women's Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Rothschild has been the Principal Investigator (PI)
on two NIH grants including to study electronic prescribing and improve transfusion practices using decision support. He has also been the Co-PI of an AHRQ grant to study the effects of hospital crowding conditions on adverse events and an investigator on an AHRQ/NIOSH grant to study the effects of fatigue on patient safety, especially in ICUs. As part of an AHRQ Center of Excellence grant awarded to Brigham and Women's Hospital, he has been the lead investigator study smart intravenous infusion pump and medication safety in hospitalized psychiatric patients. In addition he has been the PI for grants studying the role of critical care nurses as safety nets to intercept near misses and rapid response teams for failing patients. He is currently the PI on several studies including: a study of the role of pharmacists in emergency departments; a study of the effects of extended duration work shifts on procedural complications associated with attending physicians; the use of a robot to prepare chemotherapy; a study of the effects of a regional health information exchange's electronic health records and the unintended consequences of electronic prescribing.

Current research interests include patient safety, especially in the critical care setting, cardiac arrest and code team performance improvement interventions, the role of technology in reducing medical errors and adverse events and evaluating decision support to improve quality of care. Dr. Rothschild has lectured at many national conferences.
